Here’s What You Missed from the 9th Annual Streamy Awards

By Editorial Staff

What Are the Streamy Awards?

The Streamy Awards, or the ‘Streamys’, is an annual awards ceremony and event created to honor and recognize. the biggest names in online video and digital creation. The Streamys is produced by Dick Clark Productions and Tubefilter to celebrate individual creators and organizations with global audiences. In addition to the large, global audience that the creators bring in, the Streamys is also broadcasted live on YouTube to draw in millions of fans worldwide.

The Streamy Awards were created by executive producers Drew Baldwin, Brady Brim-DeForest, and Marc Hustvedt of Tubefilter along with Joshua Cohen and Jamison Tilsner of Tilzy.tv in 2009. Due to issues with the 2nd Annual Streamy Awards in 2010, Tubefilter entered a partnership with awards show producer Dick Clark Productions in 2011. Dick Clark Productions is the world’s largest producer and proprietor of televised live event entertainment programming with the “Academy of Country Music Awards,” “American Music Awards,” “Billboard Music Awards,” “Golden Globe Awards,” “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest,” and now the Streamys.

Streamy Awards nominees and winners are determined by an independent judging body of creators, executives, and other experts in the online video industry. The Streamys also acknowledge that fans are an integral component of the online video and creator community. Fans are encouraged to nominate their favorite creators and shows in various categories. The submission with the most fan nominations in select categories also receives a special designation during the judging process so that members of the Streamys Academy can take the fan input into account during their selection process. Two of the night’s awards– Creator of the Year and Show of the Year– were both determined by fans in the Audience Choice categories

The Streamy Awards is made up of over 50 awards honoring excellence in a variety of content categories and areas of expertise. The 9th annual Streamy Awards was composed of three separate sections: Streamy Awards, Streamys Brand Awards, and The Purpose Awards @ The Streamys.

The Streamys Brand Awards honor brand advertising innovations, the creatives behind it, and the new wave of influencers who are helping brands deliver their message. The Purpose Awards honor a new generation of individuals and organizations who make significant contributions to make a difference in their communities and create positive impacts.

Hosted on Dec. 13, 2019, at the Beverly Hilton, the awards show was made up of two hours of live entertainment. In its first year since 2009 without a host, the Streamys brought in more than 3 million viewers, 11,000 likes, and 1,400 comments on YouTube.

Besides the awards, the show also featured an on-stage performance of “Icy” from Kim Petras, who was introduced by Paris Hilton, and closed with a performance of “Motivation” by Normani, Appearances were also made by Derek Hough, Casey Neistat, and Lilly Singh. As a bonus, TikTok star Brittany Tomlinson, aka ‘Kombucha Girl,’ served as the Trophy Presenter.

During the show, the show’s inaugural collaborators were also featured. Vlogger Emma Chamberlain coached this year’s Breakout Creator nominees on how to give a good acceptance speech, DIY creators Mr. Kate presented the Lifestyle award while redesigning Joey Graceffa’s table, and Rosanna Pansino was joined by iJustine for live cookie decorating before they presented the Health and Wellness award.

Engineer Mark Rober created a confetti-filled award presentation for the Technology category, and Comedian Brandon Rogers hosted the first-ever live Streamys game show: “You Don’t Know Squad.” Makeup guru Patrick Starrr gave the audience an exclusive world premiere of his new song “6 Days of Christmas,” and Hannah Stocking dressed as an elf, gave out gifts to video creators Marques Brownlee, David Dobrik, Zane Hijazi and Heath Hussar, and Kian & JC.

Of the winners, there were a few surprises in the comments of the live stream. For one, most fans expected Doctor Mike to win in the Health and Wellness category because of his medical title. Viewers also were shocked when Nikita Dragun won over Jeffree Star and James Charles because they feel that Nikita doesn’t post as much as other creators, especially since Jeffree is the most followed beauty guru. For Creator of the Year, fans expected MrBeast to win since he was one of the fastest-growing YouTubers of 2019. Some also predicted David Dobrik to take home another Streamy since he won over Tana at the People’s Choice Awards for Social Star. Fans were also disappointed that Shane Dawson was not nominated for Creator of the Year, which they believe is due to the fact that he didn’t attend the Streamys last year. Similarly, fans were shocked that Jeffree Star and Shane Dawson were not nominated for Best Collaboration. For Comedy, fans were disappointed that Cody Ko and Noel Miller were both not nominated.

Here are some other creators that fans wanted to see nominated:
