Hollywood is Evolving with Sydney Sweeney’s Reddit Post Movie

By Editorial Staff

Sydney Sweeney, the actress best known for her work in Euphoria and The White Lotus, has been making waves with her venture into producing and starring in a film based on a story found on Reddit. Her untraditional source of inspiration comes as a shock to many, but could it be a new pathway to success within the Hollywood industry? Lets take a look into Sydney Sweeney’s Reddit post movie.

Sydney Sweeney’s Reddit Post Movie

I pretended to be a missing girl so I could rob her family.

The fictional story which is slated to become a movie was posted by Joe Cote four years ago to the subreddit page r/nosleep where people can share scary stories posted as personal experiences. Cote’s story follows a young woman in debt who discovers she looks like a girl from a wealthy family who has been missing for many years. She decides to impersonate the missing young woman to get into and rob the house. While her efforts first seem successful, her situation quickly takes a turn for the worse.

Stories involving kidnapping plotlines are so vast it is practically a genre. There are even a handful of fictional narratives that highlight the perspective of a person potentially impersonating a victim for personal gain including What the Dead Know by Laura Lippman along with episode-length plots in shows like White Collar and Elementary. In addition, The Orphan and Good American Family are about families who adopt a child who may be more dangerous than the parents first imagined.

It will be interesting to see what Sydney Sweeney’s Reddit post movie will add to the genre and how it will expand on the original short story. Part of the suspense of the short story genre is that they often end without a satisfying conclusion. When adapting to a feature-length story, will they decide to keep this element, or will they have to add to the story for length? Eric Roth, an accomplished screenwriter, will be developing the script and will decide how to enhance the already-interesting plot.

“Making It” in Hollywood

We all know that Hollywood is a tough industry to break into. As countless people try to make it big, anyone aiming to join the action must build the right connections and overcome hurdles to gain visibility. This is the case for actors, directors, and even screenwriters. Many people push their way into the scene by doing freelance screenwriting work or taking internship positions to get their foot in the door. This approach requires full commitment to the goal of getting a story into Hollywood. Even the people who do all the right steps still won’t make it without a little luck.

While the most traditional path to creating a movie comes from the right studio picking the perfect script and creating an amazing team to make the film a reality, there are other ways films get made. Sydney Sweeney’s choice to take on an interesting project herself is not surprising in the world of Hollywood as she has already established an addition to her acting career by launching her own production company: Fifty-Fifty Films. She now joins other actors who have found a place in the producer’s seat

In addition to actors taking up new roles in production to create interesting movies, indie productions have smaller budgets, but can often produce great masterpieces that reach wide audiences. A24 is a successful independent production company with recent projects including Heretic, We Live in a Time, and Death of a Unicorn.

Evolving Hollywood

Sweeney adopting a role in producing may not be new to Hollywood, but the fact that this film will be based on the premise of a Reddit post is pushing creativity forward. Sydney Sweeney’s Reddit post movie follows in the footsteps of another non-traditional route onto the big screen: fanfiction. Fifty Shades of Grey is probably the most well-known work that originated as fanfiction, and authors also launched franchises like After and The Kissing Booth through this nontraditional path. The Idea of You and Red, White, and Royal Blue are also books rumored to be based on fanfiction that later became movies. These moves have created a way for people to share interesting stories without seeking commercial success only for commercial success to find them nonetheless.

Sydney Sweeney’s Reddit post movie is similar to this other non-traditional source, but it has unique qualities from what we have seen before. Reddit is not a fanfiction site or even a site for long-form content. It is a form of social media that encourages niche conversation through organized channels for a variety of interests. It is for communities who share a love for the same show or hobby, want to share some life lessons, or need to know who is in the wrong. There are many channels dedicated to storytelling, both real and fictional, but many people probably wouldn’t assume that the next big blockbuster would be hiding in the Reddit comments. We will have to see how this movie performs and if it will become an example others will follow.

What’s the Future?

Sydney Sweeney’s Reddit post movie marks a move towards more diversity in Hollywood storytelling talent that we have already seen in the music industry. Instead of needing to move to a city and find an agent, shows like American Idol have made household names out of singers who were previously unknown. Music stars, like Justin Bieber and Noah Kahn, have also found success through posting music online and gaining an organic following that later led to great success. There are so many ways for people from all backgrounds to share their voices and because of that, the music industry has changed. Will Reddit storytelling be the future of changing Hollywood in the same way?

It’s hard to tell what will be next quite yet, but one thing is certain, if something becomes popular enough in social media spaces, it has the chance to explode for more mainstream audiences. Everything these days is about having an existing audience and a core following. While Reddit may not promise fame, it could be the next wave of Hollywood evolution.
