The Popularity of Food Interviews on YouTube

By Editorial Staff

Chicken Shop Date. Hot Ones. Last Meals. Food interviews on YouTube have gone viral, featuring stars answering bold questions while sharing a meal on camera.

What are food interviews, why are they popular, and which influencers are leading the trend right now? If you’re curious about the growing trend of food interviews on YouTube, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll satisfy your appetite for information and break down everything you need to know about this tasty trend.

What is a Food Interview?

Food interviews are exactly what the name suggests: interviews where food is shared, eaten, or otherwise incorporated into the interview setting. Celebrity guests share a meal with interviewers while discussing their lives and current projects.

Some food interviews do more than just provide a meal, though. Several food interview channels on YouTube subject their guests to some kind of food-related challenge. ‘Hot Ones,’ hosted by Sean Evans, features celebrities eating spicy wings while answering increasingly personal questions.

Food interviews have skyrocketed in popularity on YouTube, but the trend extends beyond the YouTube space. Some of the biggest creators in food interviews on YouTube have leveraged their popularity and broken into the larger influencer spaces, attracting A-List guests to their shows, manning the red carpet at high-profile awards events, and even participating in Super Bowl ads

With so many types of cuisine and so many styles of interviews to choose from, the variations of food interviews on YouTube are plentiful. Food and cooking creators have always been a staple of the internet, and food interviews make the most of an audience hungry for food-related content.

What Makes Food Interviews on YouTube So Popular?

If the popularity of food interviews on YouTube is anything to go by, there is something about the food interview format that captivates viewers.

Compared to the typical interview format – in which the interviewer and interviewee have nothing to focus on but each other – dining is a much more casual way to engage in conversation. Watching celebrities share a meal offers a more personal, relatable view of the stars we usually see in polished settings. Sometimes, it feels like we’re sitting at the table with them.

Food interviews can disarm the professional personas of interviewees and share their more personal sides. It’s tough to promote your project while eating your favorite food or sweating through spicy chicken. Meals engage all the senses, provoking memories and encouraging guests to share a more vulnerable side.

There’s also the visual appeal of food interviews on YouTube. Fancy meals, like the kinds boasted in Mythical Kitchen’s ‘Last Meals’ series, make for interesting visuals to accompany the interview. Each guest’s meal is unique, letting viewers imagine sharing a personal dish with their favorite celebrity.

Food interviews, particularly those that add some type of challenge to the interview, can also be suspenseful in a way straightforward interviews are not.  For the same reasons fail compilations on Youtube are compelling, so are food interviews that force their guests to try spicy, unusual, or sometimes just plain gross cuisine.

For the guests of these shows – many of whom must do dozens of interviews during press junkets – food interviews can be appealing opportunities. Food interviews break up the monotony of a typical press cycle, offering a novel way for celebrities and other creators to promote their content. Wouldn’t you prefer to have your favorite meal in front of you while you answer questions? More and more A-list celebrities are doing just that as guests in food interviews on YouTube.

Who is Doing Food Interviews on YouTube?

Many different creators are making food interviews and related content on YouTube. Here are a few of the biggest influencers in the space:

Hot Ones

If you know food interviews on YouTube, you’ve likely heard of ‘Hot Ones’ by First We Feast.

Hot Ones is a food interview show with a very simple premise. As long-time host Sean Evans introduces in every video, Hot Ones is “the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.”

On the show, Evans guides his celebrity guests through a platter of increasingly spicy wings. Episodes run 15–30 minutes, making them perfect for fans to watch while eating.

Another stand-out component of this show is its extremely well-researched questions. You won’t get bland, cookie-cutter interview questions here. Evans asks sharp, spicy questions that match the heat of the wings he serves.

First We Feast has also teamed up with Heatonist, a hot sauce company that allows fans of the show to purchase the hottest sauces from the show. Beware: these sauces really are hot! Taste with caution.

With its unique concept, top guests, and sharp humor, Hot Ones is easily one of YouTube’s top food interview shows.

Chicken Shop Date

Sometimes, the most awkward meal in the world is a first date. British YouTuber and red-carpet icon Amelia Dimoldenberg takes this idea to the next level, inflicting her characteristic wit and dead-pan humor on her celebrity guests while they visit cheap chicken shops in and around London.

On ‘Chicken Shop Date,’ Dimoldenberg acts unimpressed as if her celebrity guests invited her on a first date. Or perhaps she’s not pretending; Dimoldenberg is so quick with her pointed questions and clever comebacks that it’s hard to imagine she’s purely putting on a character. Big names like Billie Eilish, Keke Palmer, and Andrew Garfield have joined Dimoldenberg at her table. The results – as well as Amelia Dimoldenberg herself – are hilarious.

Chicken Shop Date is one part of Dimoldenberg’s content, with millions following her across social media platforms. In addition to food interviews, Dimoldenberg has ties to fashion, film, music, and television.

On Chicken Shop Date, no one escapes Dimoldenberg’s scathing wit – and no one gets a second date!

Last Meals

For a darker twist on food interviews, check out ‘Last Meals’ by the YouTube channel Mythical Kitchen.

Every Last Meals video begins with the same bold take: “Every person has exactly two things in common: we’ve all gotta eat, and we’re all going to die.”

Hosted by ‘Mythical Chef’ Josh Scherer, Last Meals encourages its guests to design and enjoy their ideal last meal while confronting one of life’s most unavoidable truths: death.

Every meal served on this channel is unique, and the questions posed by Scherer are no different. Inspired by each guest’s meal of choice, ‘Last Meals’ delves into the deep personal lives of every guest. Why is this your last meal? What memories do these meals bring to the surface? What philosophies do you hold about life, death, and everything in between? Viewers of Last Meals see a vulnerable side to the celebrity guests that can be rare in more traditional interview settings.
